休日はできるだけ家で過ごすようにしています。執筆をしたり、猫たちと過ごしたり、遠くまで散歩をしたり、料理をしたり。時には自分へのごほうびとしてNetflixを見たりもします。近頃出張が多く、家を空けることもあるため、休みの日には猫たち一人ひとりに愛情をたっぷり注ぎます。ブラシをかけてあげたり、撫でてあげたり、一緒に庭に出たりします。猫たちが楽しそうだと、私も幸せになります。猫はいつでも愛情を求めてきます。猫たちを見ていると、人間も同じように愛と優しさを欲しているのだということに気づきます。

平日は助手と過ごしているので、完全に一人で執筆に集中できるのは週末だけです。家は静まり返り、猫たちは穏やかに過ごしています。言葉が内から溢れ出してきて、私はそれをタイプします。早朝と夕方、近所を１万歩ほど歩きます。素敵な散歩道がいくつもあり、季節の変化を含め、毎回新しい発見があります。庭ではキジ、キビタキ、オオヨシキリ、ヒバリ、メジロなどの鳥が雛を育てています。近くの池では夜、ウシガエルが鳴き始めました。泳いでいるカイツブリが時折、水中にダイブするのを見ると、とてもラッキーな気持ちになります。田植えを終えたばかりの田んぼに日光が当たって空の銀色が反射すると、風景は大きな金属板がいくつも光っているように見えます。

私は動物の権利を守るという考え方に共鳴しているので、食事は魚や肉をなるべく食べないフレキシタリアンです。休日には家で植物ベースの食事を作って楽しんでいます。今日は植物ベースのルーでカレーを作ったのですが、旬の山椒を入れすぎてしまい、いつものカレーとは違う味になりました。料理での実験はいつも成功するとは限りませんね。

大きな仕事を終えた時には、一日の終わりにお疲れ様の気持ちでNetflixのドラマを見ます。日本のドラマも西洋のドラマも好きです。最近ではスコットランドを舞台にした「Dept Q」というドラマが素晴らしいと思いました。スコットランドのアクセントを聞くと、スコットランド出身である父と父方の親戚を思い出しました。ベッドで猫たちと一緒にドラマを観て、これで私の長い一日が無事に終わります。ときたま、2〜3本まとめて観てしまい、夜更かしすることもありますが・・・。

On my days off I try as much as possible to spend the day at home writing, spending time with my cats, taking long walks and cooking and sometimes for a treat, watching NETFLIX. Because I have so many business trips and have to be away overnight from my cats on my day off, I give each some as much individual attention as possible. I also brush them, take them for walks, stroke them to make them as happy as I can. When they are happy, I am happy. Cats seek constant attention, and they teach me that humans too want to be treated with love and kindness.
During the week I have an assistant with me every day so only weekends are completely free to write. The house is quiet, the cats are at peace, words flow from me, and I type with ease.
In the early morning or evening I take a long walk of 10,000 steps in the countryside nearby my house. There are endless lovely walks around my house and I enjoy the changes of the seasons and discover new things on every walk. As I write many birds such as the Kiji, kibitaki, ooyoshikiri Hibari meijiro uguisu amazaki are raising their young and in the nearby pond uma gaeru has begun to croak at night and the lovely kaitstuburi can be seen swimming and diving underwater if one is lucky. It is just passed the season of rice planting and when the paddies suddenly reflect the sliver light of the sky turning the landscape into a series of large shining metal plates.
I am an advocate of animal rights and a flexitarian. I do not eat fish or meat at home but enjoy cooking plant-based dishes on my day off. Today I made curry rice with plant-based roux and but added too much sansho which is in season now, but it changed the familiar curry rice taste. Experiments in cooking don’t always pay off.
When I finish a big project, I celebrate by ending the day watching a Netflix drama. I love both Japanese and Western dramas and recently a brilliant drama Dept Q which was set in Scotland. All of the Scottish accents reminded me of my father and his family who all came from Scotland. My cats watch the movie with me, bringing the long day to a successful end. Sometimes I watch it too late….
